sunday june 1st indigo vat dying workshop

ORGANIC INDIGO VAT DYE CLASS WITH THE MICHIGAN DYER

Sunday, June 1, 2025 9:30 – 11:30 AM EDT

Indigo is an ancient dye plant containing indigotin, an incredible natural dye compound. When exposed to oxygen, indigotin transforms from green to blue, creating indigo's iconic deep blue color. An organic indigo vat uses organic sugars, like banana peels, to ferment the indigo and achieve the striking blue color. This differs from traditional indigo vats, which can produce harmful fumes. Our organic vat – simply indigo, banana peels, and water – is completely safe to touch and breathe.

Class attendees may bring 2 pieces of clothing or textiles for the dye vat included in the registration fee, or additional pieces at $10 per piece (must purchase this class add-on separately).

Fabrics supplied by you must be a 100% natural fiber (cotton, linen, hemp, wool, silk, or blends) that has been cleaned. Ideally, lighter colors are recommended as they show the blue best, but any color is welcome. Remember color theory! Yellow turns green, red turns purple, and avoid orange (it turns brown, and not the cute brown).

We'll also have secondhand & vintage options available for purchase if you don't have anything to dye. We'll be in touch via email with cleaning instructions for your fabrics prior to the class. Additionally, we can be available for an in-person or Facetime meeting for help with fabric selection or the cleaning process support. We look forward to dying with you! $50 PER PERSON - 2 TEXTILES INCLUDED

ADD ON ADDITIONAL TEXTILES FOR $10 PER
