Vintage Obsession: Peter Max for Wrangler

I have often thought that the years of 1967 through 1973 are my favorite years in fashion and the line designed for Wrangler by Peter Max definitely checks all the boxes for me.

In 1970, Wrangler contracted pop artist Peter Max to design a bunch of fabrics and concepts for their youth-oriented clothing lines. The results leaned into trends already percolating through hippie mod culture: patchwork and cartoon novelty imagery. This Junior Women's line was only sold for a very short period of time from 1971 to 1973, so it's extremely rare and hard find, not to mention highly collectible.

They were reproduced by Wrangler a few years ago in 2017, but they didn't do the Cosmic Jump pattern - in fact, they only did solid color blocks as well as a dark blue denim. I found the reproduction line to be quite boring and sanitized, if I'm being honest.

Included in the photos are a few of the original ads. While 1971's output by Wrangler was pants and shorts only, in 1972 Wrangler added 3 styles of shirts and 1973 also included a peacoat. 1973 was the final year of production. I have also seen a duffel bag of the same fabric, but I haven't found a record of this in the Wrangler archives.

This particular pair, I purchased this along with about 7 other pairs of pants from a walk-in customer at our State Street shop in 2015. These were the standout pair of the lot. We used them for one iconic photoshoot at the Rollerama Roller Rink in Brighton, Michigan in 2015 and since then, they have been stored away by us.

However, it's 2026 now, over a decade later, and I'm feeling like it's time to revel in / nerd out over all the amazing clothing we have kept on the archive rack. These are some of the items that as a vintage collector I have come to love and enjoy; and I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I do. Here's the listing, & more photos below. <3
